There are two types of โcord cutting.โ
One is the act of giving up cable television in your house, and the other is an energetic cleansing tool that can have a powerful and positive impact on your life.
Today, weโre discussing the latter โ spiritual cord severing, specifically: cutting ties with candles.
Cord cutting can detach you from things, people, ideas, addictions, and even fears.
Whether you want to disavow a recent event or something that happened 20 years ago, cord cutting can help.
What Is A Cord Cutting Candle Ceremony?
A cord-cutting candle ceremony is a way to disconnect from things and relationships holding you back on both conscious and subconscious levels. Itโs a way to banish unwanted energy and release resentment, so youโre free to live your best life.
There are several types of cord-cutting ceremonies, but today weโre focusing on candle cord cutting.
Theyโre powerful and effective at severing ties with people, places, and things that once had a strong hold over you, including painful breakups (both romantic and platonic), traumas, and addictions.
Even if you donโt necessarily believe in the energetic plane, cord-cutting rituals can still be helpful.

Ceremonies formalize a disconnection from something thatโs plagued or hurt you, and your brain receives it as something serious, which aids the emotional healing process.
What Do I Need For A Relationship Cord Cutting?
What you need for a relationship cord cutting varies depending on what type you do. For our example, youโll need:
- Candle: Some practitioners suggest using a black candle. But we recommend using a color that most resonates with you and the exact situation. Do some research about color energy before choosing.
- Sage: Sage is a cleansing, aromatic herb that will help ready your space for the ritual.
- Water: Water is vital to life and is used to set intentions during cord cuttings.
- Cotton Yarn or Thread: In the ceremony, strings represent the bonds you want to break.
- Scissors: The โswordโ that severs the bond.
- Fire-Safe Container: Candle cord-cutting ceremonies involve open flames โ so be safe. First and foremost, ensure you have a fire-safe container to burn the string.
How Do You Practice a Cord Cutting Candle Ritual?
Michael Cardenas, the owner of Olde Ways Apothecary, explained his candle cord-cutting method to Vice.
His approach inspired ours, which is similar but includes a few twists.
1. Air Out the Room
Before beginning:
- Clean your house.
- If you donโt have enough time, focus on getting the ceremony room neat and tidy.
- Open up the windows to usher out any trapped, negative energy and welcome the positive stuff in.
Once youโre done cleaning, dusting, and putting everything in its proper place, light your sage and swirl the stick around the space, letting its smoke cleanse the air.
Bonus Tip: If you love sweet smells, also light incense or scented candles.
2. Clean Surroundings and Self
After getting your space in order, clean yourself. Take a shower or soak in a bath. Use your favorite soaps, oil, and lotions to adorn your body.
The point is to feel good and pampered.
When youโre done washing, put on clean, comfortable clothes. If you love feeling your best, do your hair and put on makeup. The goal is to feel as empowered as possible.
Bonus Tip: Getting sweat suits for at-home rituals is a good idea. Theyโre usually cute and comfortable.
3. Light Candle and Get Centered
The next step is intention setting. Think long and hard about what you want to disconnect from. What do you want to release? Again, try to be as specific as possible.
Light a candle in a safe place, get comfortable, and take a few deep breaths before you start the ritual.
Bonus Tip: Using a comfortable meditation chair can make the experience more enjoyable.
4. Bind Feet and Wrists Together
The next step may sound a little intimidating at first. After all, good things usually donโt start with โbind your feet and wrists together with the thread or yarn.โ
Alas, itโs an integral step in a cord-cutting candle ceremony.
After youโre tied up, concentrate on the thread or yarn, representing the toxic, unhelpful bond youโre attempting to cleave. Repeat things like:
- โThese binds block me from actively moving forward on my ideal path.โ
- โThis is what keeps me from receiving what I need, energetically and emotionally.โ
- โI am ready and excited to break the energetic shackles that hold me back. I release them without resentment and wish them well.โ
Bonus Tip: Donโt cut a tie with something angrily. Weโre incapable of seeing the whole picture of someone elseโs life, and there may be a perfectly reasonable and understandable reason why they behave the way they do. Moreover, in a few years, you may discover that you were the problem, not them. As such, you donโt want to leave bad vibes lingering.
5. Meditate on Topic
Now itโs time to meditate about the unwanted bond.
Why do you want to break it? What pain has it caused you?
Break each thought into smaller parts and examine each piece from every possible angle. All the while, let energy associated with your bond seep into the string.
Use your mind to kinetically transfer the pain, hurt, and shame into the cotton.

Bonus Tip: Take responsibility for your role in the toxic connection. Ask for forgiveness and forgive yourself.
6. Cut, Burn, and Spray
Once youโve poured your angst into the cotton shackles, itโs time to release yourself from the binds and burn them in the fire-safe container.
Use the scissors to cut the strings while saying one of the following:
- โI release the ties that bind me.โ
- โI move forward in light, freedom, forgiveness, and love.โ
- โI am free from my past and revel in the present.โ
After you feel you have successfully disconnected, spray or splash yourself with water to seal your intentions. Then bury the ashes somewhere away from your home or flush them down the toilet.
Bonus Tip: Try not to cut it too soon. Take time with the ritual.

What Happens When You Cut Energetic Cords?
Cutting energetic cords can be a scary proposition. On the one hand, we know that severing toxic ties is probably the best thing for us, but on the other hand, change can hurt, so we cling to what we know, even when itโs destructive.
Unbinding ourselves from the past requires honesty, self-reflection, and courage.
If youโre doing it right, you may realize youโre not a wholly innocent party and, like everyone else on the planet, have made mistakes, treated others poorly, and made terrible choices.
In that spirit, itโs always wise to send love to the thing or person with whom youโre severing ties. The graceful thing to do is leave with compassion. After all, you donโt want to burn any cosmic bridges.
After a successful cord cutting, youโll feel:
- Less burdened with stress
- More connected
- Energetically repaired
- Like your chakra is balanced
It may not work on your first try or on powerful bonds. Donโt give up; keep trying; it will eventually happen.
